From Wikipedia:
The oldest known existing recording is by Appalachian artists Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster and was made in 1933. Ashley said he had learned it from his grandfather, Enoch Ashley. Alger "Texas" Alexander's "The Risin' Sun," recorded in 1928, is sometimes mentioned as the first recording, but is a completely different song.

  • @rsnrosanne That's what I hear anyway. You Tube messed up the verse format I had it in but oh well...

  • can anybody tell me the lyrics? 'cause it's clearly different from the 'the animals' lyrics and even a bit from the lyrics of Doc Watson ... but i can't hear it properly

  • Cool. Do you own this recording?

  • Clarence "Tom" Ashley is my great uncle... I sure I would have been able to know him. My grandad said he would never really amount to much because all he wanted to do was play music... We sure missed alot of great music.

  • This recording was made in 1933 and is believed to be the earliest recording of it. Tex Alexander 's1928 song The Rising Sun is a completely different song.
