Stunning images of New Zealand http://www.nhc.net.nz/

New Zealand home of "The Lord of the Rings" was the last large landmass to be discovered as seen in the Pure New Zealand video. Resultant of developing in isolation we have thousands of unique species. GB has only two as a comparison. 11% of the world's endangered species are from New Zealand.

Common name Hectors Dolphins. Cephalorhynchus hectori. One of four of genus Cephalorhynchus. The Hectors Dolphin was named after Sir James Hector the curator of the Colonial Museum in Wellington (now the Museum of New Zealand - Te Papa). He examined the first specimen found.

Distribution Off Banks Peninsular on the East Coast off the South Island. The Maui Dolphin occurs in a limited range off the West Coast of the North Island and is no longer present in areas it once was.

About The Hectors Dolphin is unique to New Zealand and is New Zealand's only endemic marine mammal. The sub species Maui Dolphin has a population of 110 according to recent survey results. This makes it not only the world's smallest but also the world's rarest dolphin. Fears are that it may become extinct within 25 years.

Hectors Dolphins feed on fish and other sea life found in shallow water. They use echo location to locate their prey.

  • I adore Hector's dolphins. I've swum with them in Akaroa, and I plan on going back this year.

If you hadn't noticed, I've named my account after them. Cephalorhynchus hectori =)

  • I have added as a favorite a story about them you will be interested in. It describes that if you call them under water soon enough they recognise your voice and that it is you calling and they come!

  • i hear there is some swimming with dolphin programe somewhere in the north island

  • And in Lyttelton and Akaroa both by Christchurch.

  • Thanks for the lovely video. Enjoy the marine life as long it still exists...

The nuclear power plant accident in Japan and the high radioactivity will have a huge impact at the ecological system on the land and sea...

It won't take too long then the wind, the rain and the ocean stream will send the radiation around the planet.

Sad but the truth... Stop the expansion and deactivate all nuclear power worldwide and immediately!

  • @clickthisway Could you please explain how you could call to a dolphin a bit further click? I surf alongside Hectors dolphins several times a week and would be interested to have a go :)

  • Anyone enjoying this video should know that the New Zealand government, pressurised by the fishing industry, is doing nowhere near enough to save the Hector and Maui dolpins.

Three dead Hector's dolphins have been found on Canterbury beaches, two on West Coast beaches, and one on an Otago beach since December 2008 (two months since this text was posted).
