I mean I don't mean to say that you are wrong however there are advantages of both, but the American truck manufactures should take a look at some of our Australian designs because trucks especially like the Heil Durapak Python need a lot of improvment as the arm is pretty rough. Australian trucks are pretty simple, but very strong and reliable. The Iveco ACCO is the chassis used almost all over Australia for garbage collection applications, its really purpose built for garbage collection.

In Australia we also don't have huge garbage bins, the largest ones are the 240L bins (64gallon size) and some councils are replacing them with smaller bins. I have no idea how you Americans can fill up a huge 96gallon bin in 1 week unless you don't recycle enough. I have a 240L bin and it is only half to 3/4 full the majority of the weeks. in general the hopper always fills up when the trucks starts to get full or the packer is jammed, the exact same thing happens on the American trucks too!

American trucks are not as good as Australian trucks. The Australian trucks are built better and the arms are faster and are smoother. Australian trucks are able to pack the same payloads as American trucks with smaller bodies. Australian garbage trucks also have an autorev feature unlike the American trucks which operate the arm at idle so its slower. This means that when the driver moves the joystick to move the arm the engine goes from idle to 950rpm to speed up the arm and make it faster.

but still your trucks are cool tho and also the arm on that truck is somewhat faster than any amercan truck arm ive ever seen

lol i never new that plus im only 11

LOL! the hopper was full
in my opinion american refuse trucks are better cuz they dont their hoppers overloaded like that to often except of course if you have a samller truck...

The only reason our ASL hoppers get overloaded is because the truck gets full or if there is something jamming the packer. Plus the American ASL hoppers are built much larger than ours to accomodate your larger cart sizes.

this is the sort of job that has no definate finish time, the quicker you are the quicker you finish. It also depends on how good the drivers are etc...
remember, there are only so many bins to pick up each day, the less that people put out means the quicker you are finished too.
when he stops picking up at 2:38 you can see the hopper is full and he is waiting for it to 'pack' more in so he can lower the bin. you can tell too by the sounds of the engine..
such a fun job.

In a lot of ways this can be the best job when you think about it - start early/finish early, pretty good pay depending whereabouts you work, generally good working conditions and most the time a good bunch of blokes to work with :D Personally I'd love to do anything, RL FL or SL! Are you a garbo or is this just an interest or something??

I was for 2 years, but drove recycling trucks not garbage, in Melbourne. I was a driver trainer and supervisor for most of my time there aswell.
I originally got into it after my dad talked me into it, he worked there aswell for a year, I had always wanted to drive trucks etc when i was younger.
Of course it really depends who you work for and the council, you need a good mix of both.

So sounds like you were in the high ranks - trainer & supervisor - not a bad place to be. What you say is true, I know a council with their own services, guys love the job - all friendly blokes, great hours, great area. Then in my council it's contracted, guys hate it :D The council's a total bastard, some residents are total arseholes and there's heaps to collect so there's generally always long days unless you've got greens or cleanup - everything else you're easily looking at a 7-8hr day.
