I am totally fascinating with machining but dont know jack about it, why only coolant during some of the processes?

excav8or: The machining of hardened steel and other exotic materials requires instant heat transfer from the cutting edge of the tool to improve tool life. Supply of high-volume and high-pressure coolant often provides the best answer.

i am no expert, but coolant is used when taking away large amounts of material fast due to the heat produced. if your only taking away a small amount you don't need it.

Coolant was minimized in this demonstration to show as much as the cutting process as possible without the camera being sprayed by opaque white coolant.
