St Pauls School is Located 7500 feet above sea level and acclaimed as the highest public school in the world, the origin and early history of this well known institution, the second oldest in Bengal, dates as far back as the year 1823 when John William Ricketts, a prominent Anglo-Indian leader, conceived the idea of founding a public school to meet the needs of the growing Anglo-Indian population in Calcutta.
At a meeting with friends, parents and guardians of the community, "The Parental Academic Institution", as it was to be known, was established. It began functioning on the 1st of May 1823 in a small two-storeyed building at 11 Park Street.

It was sometime during the end of 1846 that the Bishop Wilson changed its name to St. Paul's, having brought it more closely into connection with St. Pauls Cathedral.
By 1863, St. Paul's was in difficulties and the Bishop Cotton, after investigating the matter gave his consent to transfer the school to Jalapahar in Darjeeling. He also decided that the school should bear the same name as it did in Calcutta.

Sometime during 1864, on the large Jalapahar estate, St. Paul's reopened its doors with thirty-one boarders and a few day scholars and the Rev. J. C. Nesfield as Rector.

The first building that constituted the school unfortunately does not exist today. It has yielded place to a playing field. It is said that its foundation is still vaguely visible after a heavy shower.

A number of old boys served in the Great War in various capacities and it was in their memory that the present chapel was erected in 1934.

Over the years, a number of estates were purchased and merged with the existing school estate, thus growing into its present expanse.

Home to over seven hundred students today and at a grand old age of a hundred and eighty, St. Paul's has indeed come a long way. Set in the majestic grandeur of mountains and lush greenery, with the Rev. D. A. Howard as Rector, it is more than just a school.
The film was made by Vikram Rai and Samir Sharma. The Voice Over was done by then Senior Master of St. Paul's School, Mr Sunirmal Chakraborty. He is currently the principal of La Martiniere for Boys Calcutta.

  • Thankyou Mr. Chakrovaty for this wonderful video of St. Paul's School, my old school, a home away from home and the place where I spent half my life.

The video truly took me back to those old days. I saw myself in each picture in the video when in my days. Yes, I saw myself standing out the Rector's and your office also.

    Very touching.

    Thankyou once again.

    Sincerely,

    Omshree N KC
