Mahwah Town Hall - June 27, 2012 (Transcript Below)

Governor Christie: And all spring these Democrats, they were telling us that they were going to pass a tax cut too. It's going to be different than mine but that they were committed to cutting taxes also. You may have read about this and all through the spring it's going to be which tax cut plan is going to be adopted? Mine or theirs? Finally, you know, I got to May and June, and I said to myself, you know what matters more to me is not that I win, but it's that you win.
You've seen over and over again that I've been willing to work with Democrats. When Democrats are willing to be reasonable and compromise, I've done it over and over and over again. And I'll sign a bunch of bills in the next couple of weeks that pass tomorrow on important issues that are all the subject and work of compromise. But they're all because they found their way onto the boulevard of compromise. On this one, they're asking me to compromise my principles. They're saying I should raise taxes on the most overtaxed people in America. I won't. They're saying that we should keep money in Trenton that we don't need that can be better spent and saved by you and your families. I won't compromise on that.

So here's the bottom line: I'm happy to compromise with these folks every time it's reasonable to do so. But when they ask me to compromise my principles, when they ask me to take more money out of your pocket and they demand that I not give any of it back to you at all, well, that's where I draw the line. The line is drawn in the sand everybody. This is it.
