  • @mxgirl918 Western Australia?

Do you mean the western end of Australia?

That's like saying South America is unoriginal.

  • @elgostine Yes, the guy I replied to mentioned this. The tale is that Eirik Raude called it Greenland to attract settlers to the island, but it was written down 2-300 years after its discovery, and it could easily be the author's joke as well as Eirik's own, since it's widely recorded that vikings all over Scandinavia frequently exercised a deeply sarcastic and ironic sense of humor. Since it's not unlikely it was a literary joke, there exists other theories, like the one I mentioned.

  • @dradeel i heard that leif erikkson called it greenland on purpose to attract his rivals to it..

he said i have discovered this greenland, i will give it to you if you will do such and such.

  • So that's why we have uninteresting names such as New Amsterdam/New York, New Hampshire, Western Australia, New South Wales, Newfoundland and of course, Greenland.

  • @WeiRetatk824 Ich komm aus Österreich. Also nicht deutsch. Sorry.

  • @blenderpanzi That is supposedly the tale, but another interesting theory is that since the climate during the middle ages was as warm as today on Greenland, but over a long period of time, the ice on Greenland was actually farther inland, leaving the coastal areas with plains of grass.

A third possibility is a combination of both of them. Hehe. What is true, though, is that Vikings often had a sarcastic and ironic sense of humor about things they said or did :P

  • hm wer is deutsch

  • I think Greenland was named by exiled vikings that wanted to make it look (sound) attractive to more settlers, or something.

  • @thedunneymonster ofc, its just my opinion too :p

  • @darthpsykoz its just an opinion mate. no need to shit yourself
