The Yasutaka Fujimoto Laboratory at Yokohama National University is engaged in spiral motor research.

The spiral motor is configured by joining together a spiral shaped rotator designed with a center shaft and a spiral shaped stator of wound coils. The male screw is inserted in the female screw and rotated, and this screw mechanism is used to produce the back and forth movement of the screw as linear motion. While there are many motors that move linearly, the spiral motor has a wider magnetic field surface area and can output five times the force of a conventional linear motor. Applications are expected in a variety of industrial fields.

  • So, nice spiral motor has to have a nice spiral bearing / actuator screw to go with it, to keep the faces of the motor apart. So not only do you have to build an odd lead screw, you have to build an odd motor to go with it. And having done all that the power output drops off at either end of the cycle will be notable as it winds out of its mating part..This comes across re inventing the wheel & making it square, 'cos hay, we've not had one of those !
