The wings should sweep back around 400 knots. during take off and slow speed the plane needs more lift.

The wing sweep was controlled by the Tomcat's Central Air Data Computer (CADC) based on the Mach number to optimize the aerodynamic performance. It could also be manually controlled by the pilot.

I think the sweep begins just under mach 1. Generally the sweep is controlled by the onboard computer and as was stated earlier the pilot can manually control the sweep as well. Gonna miss the F-14 for sure....

@TheSpaceace73 When in auto mode they tuck at a certain speed. The pilot has the ability to manually control the degree of sweep based on the conditions.
