Before performing a concert in Canal+ studios on May 11, 2009, in Paris, the band answers a few questions. The interview is translated in French over the Green Day boys' voice.
Transcript:
Canal+: Your responsibility towards the fans?
Billie Joe: I feel like we wanna make records that our fans love. I think about them all the time, in anything that we are writing.
Tré Cool: It's like our extended family. And it imposes responsibilities. It's a love thing, we love connecting with the crowd. When we play live, it doesn't matter if it's 100 000 people in some giant field, or like 100 people here in the studio. It's still a connection, it's addictive and we love it. We love you guys!
Canal+: Still Rock n 'Roll, despite the success?
Mike: We love the history of Rock n 'Roll. We all really like vinyl records. We all really like listening to bands that we've been listening to. And how they strive to become the best they could be. It's really very exciting.
And I think that all the touring that we've done have really brought us education and a connection with our fans around the world. Rock n 'Roll is a great passport.
Canal+: American Idiot into a musical?
Mike: Yeah, actually, Billie was approached by Michael Mayer and Tom Hulce. They were the ones that put out Spring Awakening which is a really amazing young take on an old German play and it was very successful. We went and saw it. We didn't know anything about Broadway, or plays or anything.
And when we saw it, we realized this is not our grandparents' play. This is something that was dangerous, and sexy, and violent, and relative to today and emotions. And I think he's carrying a lot of that over into the workshops that we've seen for the American Idiot play so far. We're very excited.
Billie Joe: It's gonna be great.
Mike: These kids are really talented, who are performing in it.
Canal+: The secret of your longevity?
Mike: We prepared for that, I guess, since how many years?
Canal+: You started very early, very young?
Billie Joe: I think it's having a certain respect for each other's personal integrity. As a musician and as people. We are best friends. And I think we have a lot of respect for each other as musicians too.
Canal+: Oakland, still a source of inspiration?
Mike: I think so. That's kind of where we live. We are pretty grounded there. But we also like to travel. It's a very diverse city, with a lot of underground culture. Parts of the city are very cosmopolitan. Other parts are very dangerous. So, we like where we come from. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, that's for sure.
