A rhythm for the egungun or, ancestors. This style of playing is common among the Yoruba people at Adjarra and Pobe in Benin, West Africa. It is quite different fron the playing styles of the Lukumi and, tends to be much more aggressive in nature...
(Eliminated from this rhythm are the gudugudu drums which support the Iya and omeles...)

The variations played are my own and, in no way, should they be interpreted as traditional rhythms from the Lukumi repertoire or Oru Secu.

! I have broken with a Lukumi tradition, in the sense that I have allowed a girl to play these drums.

  • Thanks Nery...

Again, the terms tend to be regional and may have much to do with local traditions...

    The post is appreciated.

  • actually its is omele... the three names are omele abo, omele ako, and iya ilu... in cuba its most commonly known as okonkolo and itotele but there are a few elders in cuba that refer to the name omele for both...
