0 - Monserrat Caballé talks about her very debuts in the Opera House in Basel (Switzerland) where she started as a student since the opera house (sopranos) cast was full. She did not get paid then and also had to work on her own, out of the opera, in order to earn some money. Difficult times, she also then had doubts about herself and she thought of giving up opera However she remained confident, seeing that as an opportunity to learn, and thought that one day she might be lucky. She says how happy she was to get that first "contract" and she shared her happiness with her mother.
2:10 The first role she got was Annina in La Traviata. She was very moved, she was crying like a child because she sung with her great soprano (Violetta) who impressed her a lot. She was unable to sing "Comandate?" when Violetta calls Annina because she was overwhelmed with emotion. She had to learn how to keep her emotion for herself while on stage.
3:04 The second role she got was the First Lady in Die Zauberflötte. That was a difficult role since, at the time, she did not speak German,
3:18 The third role was in the Ange de feu by Prokofiev. She was one of the 6 sisters and learnt her partition thinking she would sing a solo but when she attended the reahersal she was very surprised since someone was already singing as she was ready to sing her part: it was sextet and she did not know about that!
3:56 The interviewer mentions the beginning of her great career as she replaced Marilyn Horne in Lucrezia Borgia in New-York in 1965. Since then she a been considered as one of the greatest voices and singers of this century. He says that here is some cruel in the fact the fate decided (because of Mrs. Horne not singing) in one evening something Montserrat Caballé could have been waiting for years and years.
4:43 She answers she does not believe in glory. It is only a matter of having a voice and being sensitive to sounds, she feels lucky to have that and to be able to transmit it. Luck also is to do something you love and to give something humanitarian aspect to this all. It is a strange mixture between music and oneself: like a wedding! When one is married with music, one does not need glory!
