Cyprus President Christofias returned to Cyprus unexpectedly from a trip to London where he was due to attend a meeting organised by Gordon Brown, of Left-wing Governments in Europe.

Christofias had an impromptu press briefing at Larnaca airport on his return to explain that George Iacovou would represent him at the London meetings - he apologised to Cypriots in London who were due to have a rally there which he was due to address.

He explained that he deemed it necessary that he return to Cyprus in order to personally meet with ambassadors of the permanent members of the UN Security Council and with UN Representatives on the island about the continuing violations by Turkish police during the Ledra Street opening on the previous day. He explained that despite Talat having previously tried to change laws on the Turkish side in order to bring the police in 'the north' under the control of his 'government', this had not been accomplished, and so the Police of the Turkish Cypriot 'state' are under the control of Turkey, and thus of its military.

He explained that he would also be in contact with Turkish Cypriot leaders in Cyprus for consultations on the matter of what he termed Turkey's interventions in yesterdays Ledra Street opening, which had caused the newly opened crossing point to be closed just hours after it had been opened.
