THIS IS THE MOST SPECTACULAR ANTEBELLUM MANSION ON TOUR IN NATCHEZ, MS. DURING THE SPRING AND FALL PILGRIMAGES. BUILT IN 1857 THIS HUGE MANSION WAS LIVED IN BY IT'S BUILDER ONLY SIX MONTHS WHEN THE OWNER DIED. THERE ARE OVER 400 ANTEBELLUM AND HISTORICAL STRUCTURES IN NATCHEZ. AT ONE POINT , BEFORFE THE CIVIL WAR, THERE WERE MORE MILLIONAIRES LIVING IN THE NATCHEZ AREA THAN THERE WERE IN NEW YORK CITY.
@plantationmuscleboy Union forces overtook Natchez completely unscathed by Admiral Porter. A couple of cannonshots flew into town from Union gunboats enough to scare the inhabitants but there really was no southern army to defend Natchez. I think Stanton Hall was used as a headquarters for a while and nothing was disturbed in regards to property, etc. Same with southern Lousiana plantations where you can still see wonderful mansions.

@55lincoln Thank you Sir. I'm just thankful Sherman didn't burn all of the finest mansions otherwise the political correct 'historians would try to paint the southern planter as a poor, ignorant slave owner without any class or mannerisms. However, when you see a home like Stanton Hall, comprehending its elegance & beauty, you have a better understanding of how successful, sharp, and cotton-oriented they really were. The so-called McMansions of today are nothing compared to antebellum mansions

@plantationmuscleboy Glad U could hear the horses. I taped that driveway knowing the carriage was approaching. Describing this imagined carriage I think you are waxing poetic again. What a picture you painted. I can imagine this scene you described very well.

@55lincoln My gosh! You really can hear the horse hooves striking the ground on their way up the drive! I totally missed that the first time I viewed. Thank you for pointing it out! Forget high performance cars, I'd be honored to be a part of a society that arrives in the luxury of a white cabriolet barouche carriage decorated w/ red velvet plush inside of a creamy white carriage body w/ brass rims on the wheel w/ my dusky driver at the reigns delivering me to another grand plantation party

@plantationmuscleboy Turn up the volume for you CAN hear a tour carriage going by Stanton Hall. I can visualize multiple carriages coming up this driveway and letting out the invited guests to attend a social event.

What a view! I can almost hear the wheels & hooves of horses pulling elegant carriages coming up the drive. As carriages approached, footmen would rush to open doors for members of the South's elite cottonacracy as the beautiful lady of the plantation welcomed visitors to her lavish home for a party dinner event. There she would admire the most prominent & yet spoiled southern belles in skirts of pastel flounces & billowing taffeta with satin bows. An evening of privilege for the cotton rich.
