When William Stanier joined the LMS Railway in 1932 their locomotive stock was not large enough or powerful enough to support an efficient service of express passenger trains between London and Glasgow along the West Coast Main Line. Within a year Stanier introduced his Princess Royal Class locomotives, which included Princess Elizabeth. It was his answer to Gresley's Flying Scotsman, operating with the LNER on the East Coast Main Line.
