Libraries in America are being attacked, and might be forced to ban childrens books!

On 1/22, The Consumer Products Safety Commission held a meeting, and announced that childrens books are likely to be included in the items that must now be tested for lead as a result of the Consumer Porduct Safety Improvement Act of 2008 being passed. In the coming weeks, they will decide if this includes the books found presently at libraries all across the nation. If they vote in favor of this interpretation, the libraries will have two options - Either outright ban all childrens books alltogether, or If they were to try and keep childrens' books, they would have to test them all for lead. This would be so cost-prohibitive that doing so would certainly force more libraries to close.

If you care about education, reading, and America's children, go to the link below, find out more, and cal them to let them know that you want them to SAVE THE LIBRARIES!

This is America. If we want to live in a nation where certain books are banned, I'm afraid we missed Nazi Germany by about 65 years.

  • What about textbooks in schools for kids under 12? are they being tested?

  • I couldn't tell you from the articles I have, but I would almost imagine that they would be forced to be tested as well if this is passed. Of course, the schools would have to since they're government operated, and of course, the government will probably just deduct the expense from the measly funding they already put into schools.

    Thanks for watching!

  • HR 4040 is one of the most asinine pieces of legislation ever. It's so vague and broad that it basically will kill all cottage industries associated with children's items, all resale/charity/ebay/craigslist activity, as all things sold prior to 2/10/09 are considered contraband. In this economy, it annihilates jobs, & many parents can only afford to clothe/buy toys/books/sports equipment if it's used or given for free.

I wrote Oberstar and his response was all of these concerns are MYTHS!

  • Yeah, the whole act needs to be thrown out the window.

Hey, I've got a better idea. Instead of imposing lead testing on all these small US companies that were completely innocent in the lead poisoning scares, why don't we solve the problem and quit buying toys from Chinese sweatshops? Maybe tax the snot out of toy imports and offer tax breaks to US toy makers? That would promote US jobs and avoid the lead issue altogether. But that might make to much sense for a politician to comprehend.

  • reedingz es 4 no0bz, lulz.

  • and as for the books,it's only the kid's books that get affected,no one would care about those.

  • Well, nobody, um, except for the kids. And the parents who need to entertain those kids. So really, the only people who probably don't care are in the 13-21 year old range, and considering the teen pregnancy rates, it's probably more like 13-15.

  • wait... what?

    gotta fuckin love beaurocracy. -_-

people have no power anymore... the power lies in policy, which is ALWAYS written by stodgy, geriatric bastards with a hardon for causing as much discomfort as they feel is necessary (the whole archaic "wrath of god" christian upbringing which governed their lives)...

we REALLY need a violent revolution..

so all future generations will actually LEARN something about the countless wrongdoings of our entrenched "leaders".

  • Come August 14, 2009... yep 2009, Public Law 110-314 will take effect. Which means, all those small businesses who were told that they would be OK under this CPSIA Law of 2008, still have to face The Mandatory-Third-Party-Testing. Maybe a nice letter or call to our representatives in Congress would be a good idea. Either they represent us or maybe they could go work for CPSC.

  • Omg I love libraries! I'm at one at my school right now, of course I'm no longer a child as I'm already 18, but I still do not condone the abolition of libraries at schools.

    But who was phone?

  • Sorry, did i miss it?

I live in Scotland, so the time will be different. And that means it will probably be on when I'm away :(

    is it recorded anywhere?
