A RepRap "Mendel" 3D printer in action at Kwartzlab in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, printing out the Kwartzlab logo.
The RepRap works a bit like a computer-controlled glue gun. ABS plastic is fed into the extruder head and melted by a nichrome heater, then pushed out on to the build platform. Layers of plastic are successively extruded on top of each other, resulting in a three dimensional plastic object.
