NCHOR:
The film "The Red Baron" premiered in Berlin and is about Manfred von Richthofen, who achieved at least 80 aerial warfare victories when he served as a German pilot. Its one of few films to take a look into the life of a German hero.

STORY:
Racing through the skies during World War One - the German fighter pilot known as The Red Baron.

Now the life of the flying ace, whose real name was Manfred von Richthofen, has been turned into a film which was premiered in Berlin.

Von Richthofen is a legend in Germany and beyond - and he achieved at least
80 aerial warfare victories when he served as a German pilot at the age of 25.

In 1916, he became a member of the new fighter squadron - where his talent was quickly spotted by superiors, who then got him to train other young pilots.

Von Richthofen is played by up and coming German actor Matthias Schweighoefer.

He says there shouldn't just be films made about the dark moments of German history:

[Matthias Schweighoefer, Main Actor];

"I think stories about German heroes have a place in the cinema\ again, and they should return to the cinema, because we not only had a terrible past but we also had heroes. I certainly think it's worthwhile to turn their stories into movies."

Von Richthofen is widely regarded as being one of these heroes and someone with high morals who adhered to his own code of honour.

And why the "Red Baron"? That was down to his bright red Fokker DR-I plane - which also gave him the nicknames Red Devil, and Le diable rouge.

As the film about him premieres almost exactly 90 years after his death - it may bring his story to a new generation.

  • @xvoy2002 this was still a time of honour and chivallery dude. A noble and worthy opponent is worth the respect. This is something sadly lacking today.

  • The Germans were Not heroes they were sheeple just as Americans that r Apostle mockers that take their orders from Bush & Obam. They should have took orders from Yahweh & let everyone else be a liar.

  • @gayhorseseathaaay at 31 don't you think you should be grown out of the whole "goodies and baddies" mentality of warfare?

War does not determine who is right, only who is left.

  • WW1 was caused by many nations and can hardly be just laid on Germany. Nonetheless, what a waste of great people! Please world ... let's all work hard for world peace and try to respect one another. Let's work to avoid another major war.

  • I like this movie more all the time. It is worth owning.

  • This movie needs to be on HBO or Showtime.

  • Interesting how a German pilot,, the enemy of the Allies, is still respected by both sides. He was buried with full military honours by the British.
