This is a beautiful video. They were truly a magical pair on the ice. You could feel the depth of their love in every touch.

True but sadly doctors didn't xray the heart unless he showed signs and sadly his disease could only be found on an xray :( Sergei was so careful but he just wasn't in the time where Doctors know to use xrays more often to look at the heart.

Because of his father's early death, he was careful. He'd had a check-up less than two months before his death and the doctor(s) gave him a clean bill of health.

All athletes have routine checkups. It is just that in the 90s they did not check the heart as much as they do these days. To check the heart for what he had, they had to do Xrays and doctors try to not overuse that unless the person shows problems. He had small symptoms happen to him but he overlooked it because he thought it was due to his chronic back/shoulder pain. Actually many people would overlook it. I actually experienced an sport injury that I ignored do to thinking it was nothing.
