If you love working on cars, don't be an auto mechanic. You'll hate cars.

I strongly agree. I have a automotive certificate and am ASE certified. I have been unemployed for over a year.

i got the same degree as an ASE in 13 weeks. been under the hood a while. all to often i've gone behind ASE technicians to fix what they miss or verify they didn't do anything at all but charge money. i worked for a shop that charged niassan owners for an oil filter that the shop couldn't even get. i don't do alignments, i rebuild front ends, all brakes. diagnose and repair. not many ASEs have been to a gale banks lecture. i hate GM because they're overengineered.

So true, I've been a tech for 10 years and the thought of doing this for another year is going to kill me. Removing dashes, transmission and engines on cars you don't even like.

haha like most of these comments, if I could go back I wouldve done a different trade....one of the least respected trades around, sure it can be fun to fix your own car in the garage, but doing it all day for people who have no idea how hard you have to work to fix their vehicle is pretty thankless....

If you're thinking about being a mechanic, realize that you'll love working on cars, but you're going to hate your asshole of a boss or shitty customers who thinks everything is your fault.
