The way that speakers are designed to make sound, is to produce waves through air particles in the atmosphere, this is done by a vibration through the speaker of a variety of frequencies.

How does sound travel? Well if you can imagine a table filled with small balls, when you knock one of them, the others will be hit too, but the further away the balls are the lighter the collision and the less they will move. This is basically how sound works.

Speakers consist of a diaphragm cone, which is the main piece that looks like a drum skin, commonly made of paper, plastic or metal. In the centre of the diaphragm is the voice coil, protected by a dust cap. Around the outer edge of the speaker is suspension material to help support the speakers natural vibration and is held together by a metal basket to give the speaker strength in its structure.

To the rear of the speaker is an electromagnet, which drives the vibration to the speaker by alternating the orientation of the poles.

Amplifiers are essential to aid in a speakers peak performance; they apply electricity to the speaker to help produce more controlled vibration, therefore producing a higher quality and louder sound.

Car audio systems use amplifiers, computers use amplifiers, electric keyboards use amplifiers, and they all have speakers.
