Mysty, our 8 year old Sheltie, suffered a fibrocartilaginous embolism , F.C.E., July 25, 2009 She had just finished a drink of water when she just collapsed on the floor. She suffered no pain, but without assistance her only initial locomotion was crawling. This F.C.E. happened right after our evening walk which was preceded by an earlier thunder storm that she vigorously protested. Our "rescue" Sheltie , Fox Mulder, stayed close beside her and gave her lots of emotional support.
We didn't know that Shelties are predisposed to F.C.E.'s and we're trying to spread the word about them: F.C.E.'s are bad, but they aren't the end-of-the-world!
