This piece has an unpromising origin: It was commissioned by Shell UK Ltd. as a test piece for competitors in the Shell/London Symphony Orchestra Music Scholarship at the Henry Wood Hall. But Panufnik somehow created a really splendid piece of music for that occasion. It is lively and lyrical in turn and finishes with a very exciting ending.
The ensemble is London Musici conducted by Mark Stephenson. I also have the older recording of Panufnik directing the London Symphony Orchestra with Kurt-Hans Goedicke and Michael Frye as the soloists. The newer version has a much crisper recorded sound which really does enhance the impact of the music.
