Film Description: Edward Zwick returned to the director's chair for the first time since 1998's The Siege with this sweeping period drama set in 19th-century Japan. After centuries of relying on hired samurai for national defense, the Japanese monarchy has decided to do away with the warriors in favor of a more contemporary military. Tom Cruise stars as Nathan Algren, a veteran of the U.S. Civil War who is hired by the Emperor Meiji to train an army capable of wiping out the samurai. But when Algren is captured by the samurai and taught about their history and way of life, he finds himself conflicted over who he should be fighting alongside. Billy Connelly, Tony Goldwyn, and Ken Watanabe co-star.

@corsair831 they would not of won either way. In the end the modern world would eat them up. Part of the Samurai way was honour. If they were going to go down they might as well stand for what they believe in while dying. Imagine the Samurai retreated back to there homes then got burned and siege in there valley. Thats what would of happened if they tried every possible way to win

@bullmeatt -- you are outmatched by a force superior in arms, numbers, and resources, however they're an invading army in a rural setting. = Guerilla tactics only way to win. If honour leads you to lose so hard in this fashion it can kiss my deceitful backstabbing cheating balls.

@corsair831 this was a time of honour. In modern day war tactics they should of surrendered or retreated.

It has nothing to due with tactics, its their final stand and they are going to try and kill as many of their enemies and even kill the enemy commander and win the battle. Its the "we will not bow and will die fighting" sort of thing
