John, is there any risk of the squash getting so heavy that they break off the vine? Like, could a pumpkin be grown this way without falling off, or would I need to support it somehow? It seems like I've heard of people using old pantyhose to make hammocks to support large squash.

Yes, that COULD happen. That being said, I didnt have any problems yet. What you would want to do is to make a sling (or hammock) with some pantyhose to support the squash. That being said, I grew bananna squash on a trellis and they were like 20-30# each.. with no added support. As the fruit grows slowly, so does the stem its attached to, and it gets stronger.

how would this work with say road mesh? (super sized chicken wire.) I was setting up 6ft long sections with fence posts on the end for blackberries and such. do you think that would work too? I have limited flat space in my garden and butternuts always start to rot with heavy rains. thanks for any advice you can give me.

is road mesh the same as what they put under concret before pouring a sidewalk? Then yes, it should.

yes, needed to train them and weave them thru the trellis.

weird shapes from cross pollen from other squash types ,, I grew waterlopes last summer ,,plants too close and the bees wern't picky ,,still ate them though,was differnt !! so did ya eat em ??

@growingyourgreens yup thats the stuff. I think im going to try tomato cages for my cucumbers and the road mesh for the squash. I'm glad I found this video I never knew you could do squash and stuff like this. thanks much mate. good luck to you this growing season.
