Tesla coil is an air cored RF transformer:secondary is a quarter wave resonator ie the length of wire in the secondary coil is quarter of the operating frequency's(f) wavelength. f is set by the geometry of the topload (capacitor with surrounding environment) and secondary coil that is an inductor, which together form a tank circuit (LC tuned) To tune/find the secondary f you can use a sg cro and dmm once the secondary frequency is set/known you need to tune the primary, which is a large HV capacitor and physically large inductor constructed with high current carrying capacity for hi Q. The primary capacitor can be mmc (multi mini caps) or Mylar oil/flashing as mine are the spark gap is a 2 electrode gap blown by a vacuum clearer motor When a spark is establishing in the primary tank it needs to be extinguished as fast as possible the primary is powered by a psu consisting of a nst with the magnetic shuts removed in oil to assemble the coil the secondary sits inside the primary with no direct connection, the coupling is inductive when running the capacitors discharge into the primary cold that setup a magnetic Field that collapses inducing a curring into the secondary the primary is tuned to the same frequency as the secondary by means of a tap point to work out the operating frequency have Xl=Xc solve for f operating frequency for my coil was determined to be 137khz, and the primary was tuned to this frequency

@nambassa2000 LOL thx - the serb is the legend! Im just copying his stuff! ....the kiwi ingenuity is to make it from junk I find in bins. I used to go to Nambassa (and Sweetwaters) with my parents when I was young,I did not really get it then...I get it now ;)
