Charlie Gall was a key figure in the 1950's Scottish Jazz revival, having been a co-founder, with Jim McHarg, of the famous Clyde Valley Stompers in 1953. This track was privately recorded by a friend of the Hot Five Jazzmakers, Phillip Champion, on a small personal recorder, during a concert at the George hotel, as part of the Edinburgh International Jazz Festival, on August 4th 1996. Janet Shaw has slipped over ot the piano for this blues, joining the rhythm section of Gary Scriven - drums; Rainer Hunck - banjo and Colin Bray - string bass. Leader Brian Towers is on trombone. Charlie was with the Hot Five Jazzmakers from 1993 to September 14th 1996, when he played his last concert before retiring for health reasons. these photographs were all taken during that period.
Charlie had by-pass surgery late in 2008 and is making a gradual recovery, at the time of writing in March 2009. His retirement left a large gap in the Toronto traditional jazz scene.
