Wow, what a performance!! Everyone gets their fair share of camera-time, unlike the Last Waltz.

Fair enough; Richard's voice was amazing in the earlier years, but he definitely started to lose his voice over the years of touring. By the time they played the Last Waltz, he wasn't the same. And while Garth did hold the post of music teacher and had invaluable influence on the rest of them, when it came time to perform, I always sort of considered Levon the team captain. But, like you said, they were an incredibly tight group and it couldn't have worked without any one of them.

Actually the Band considered Richard Manuel their "lead singer". The one who pretty much wrote all the songs was Robbie Robertson. They also considered Garth Hudson the most musically talented and the bands personal music teacher. You gotta love Rick Dankos bass lines and vocals as well. Its hard to say who the heart of The Band is when they're such a tightly knit group.

Robbie never had a southern accent--he's canadian, just like the rest of them, except Levon Helm, the drummer. He rarely sung, because he was not good at it. Sounds like you meant to say that Levon was the heart of the band. And I would agree with you.

By far the best version of this song.

Have to agree. I wore out this album playing it over and over again. Just a magnificent version of the old Marvin Gaye classic.

This is not from the Last Waltz, that version is much shorter and they're all in blue suits. This one is from Rock of Ages (live double LP).
