The multi-author nature of the text of the Hebrew Bible has led biblical scholars to postulate its creation by centuries of writers who collected, compiled, revised, edited, and interpreted ancient traditions.
Biblical scholars have deduced that Deuteronomy, which calls itself Scroll of the Torah, was edited centuries after the purported Moses made sermons on behalf of Yahweh. The book of Deuteronomy is attributed to a group that scholars call the Deuteronomic or Deuteronomistic School. The Deuteronomists modified pre-existing, Covenant Code laws in light of new, more humanitarian ideas.
After the fall of the Northern Kingdom in 722 BCE, King Josiah supposedly found the Scroll of the Torah when the temple was being refurbished. Josiah's subsequent reforms, around 622 BCE, are recorded in 2 Kings. Measures were taken to stamp out Baal worship and to centralize Yahwism. Deuteronomy differs from other books of the Torah in its rhetorical tone. Deuteronomy centralizes the cult, displacing rural Levites, and it treats the monotheistic deity as an abstraction. No longer is the deity depicted as residing in rural tabernacles, but the name of the deity is regarded as dwelling in the temple.

Before joining the Yale faculty in 1996, she was Assistant Professor of Hebrew Studies in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University for three years. A specialist in talmudic-midrashic studies, Hayes offers undergraduate courses on the literature and history of the biblical and talmudic periods (including Introduction to the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible and Introduction to Judaism).
