Carnival -- Regina Carter 2002

Regina Carter performs at the 2002 Bern Switzerland Jazz Festival. She is backed up by Rodney James guitar, James King bass and Alvin Queen drums.

Who is Regina Carter and what is her approach:
" I followed a more non traditional route. I initially learned by ear, the later learned to read, then learned theory. This kind of experience freed up my playing so I'm not stuck on the stage and I'm not afraid not having a piece of music in front of me. When I heard a recording by violinist Jean-Luc Ponti I knew I wanted to play improvised music"

Carter was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1966 and began as a classical violinist but became increasingly interested in jazz , and is considered one of the finest violinists in the genre. She is the cousin of famous jazz saxophonist James Carter. Carter received a degree in music from Oakland University and studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston before forging her jazz career. She began leading her first band, an "electric band."
