GARY LUCAS: PART 9 LIVE SPITZ 5/04/05
"Legendary left-field guitarist Gary Lucas" (The Guardian) plays here
live solo acoustic in a May 2005 concert at London's now sadly
departed Spitz club, right off Brick Lane in the Spitalfields
district (Jack the Ripper's old stomping grounds), in a concert
captured by a fan.
Here Gary Lucas plays a brief snatch of "Songstress on the Edge of
Heaven", his arrangement of Chow Hsuan's '30's Chinese pop
masterpiece which she sang in the film "The Angel on the Street". He
then segues smoothly into "Sure 'Nuff 'n Yes I Do" from Captain
Beefheart's "Safe as Milk" album, and then, rapidly editing, plays a
fragment of his original instrumental "Lucubrations", then swings
into "Jericho", his original song which first appeared on his '94
album "Bad Boys of the Arctic". This is followed by a medley of
several of his arrangements from his album of 1930's Chinese pop,
"The Edge of Heaven", starting with "If I'm Without You", w segues
into the sublime "Night in Shanghai"--as you heard by the applause,
definite crowd favorites!
