First of all,Tchaikovsky is about EMOTION.To play his pieces the right /and notable/ way,one must have the soul of a little child,of a grown up man and a passionate woman all in one. And not just show technique.
Colorless orchestra,over-speeding soloist and conductor, tasteless approach to this exceptionally emotional concerto. That's what this performance is.
In my opinion, the Gilels/Maazel and the Gilels/Kondrashin recordings are by far the best, although some may criticize Mazel for being slow

The conductor starts jumping with excitement in the finale.

@MrYou2ber No, but they sure beat the crap out of Op. 23 again, didn't they? Pletnev won the Tchaikovsky Competition VI. I don't know what his final round performance was, but I know that in the course of the Compeition he did play the Second Concerto. (I graduated from U-Michigan right at that time, but other than a piano score of the Second that I couldn't affford, I knew nothing of the work, LOL.)

@pitschi2001 Agree completely; the First has its charm but I've never understood why #1 was so much more popular than the Second. The G concerto is MUCH better in melody, harmony, orchestration, musical developments, pianistic "style," and yes, pure bombast too... I don't care all that much for this performance, it's very rushed at the end, but the Pletnev-Fedoseyev CD done right about the same time is *definitive* of hte Tchaikovsky Second.

All the best playing, of late, seems to be coming from Russia. This guy is phenomenal. I've also gotten into Konstantin Scerbakov, lately, though it seems most of his albums have suddenly and inexplicably been removed from iTunes...
