I think the goal of Fast & Furious was to get American guns down there and then make a big bust with lots of US guns so they could then say all these guns in Mexico are from the US so they could push for a new ban. In reality not many guns the cartels are using are from the US. Some are no doubt but not enough to push for new US laws so I think the goal was to make a big bust with guns easy to trace back to US dealers & then push for a new ban.
