This video shows Michael VK5ZEA testing the G4KLX Software based D-Star client. This software uses a DV Dongle, two sound cards and a 9600bd compatible radio (plus some other stuff) to both transmit and receive D-Star compatible GMSK audio.

  • Why does everybody sound like a computer generated voice not ham radio really, audio and sound quality is awful

  • @MrKennnyj I did explain why this is the case in the video. Using the radio interface with transformers does compromise the low frequency response which does corrupt the data and makes the D-Star error correction work overtime to get everything back. D-Star does not sound like FM, there is a price to pay for only using 6.25KHz of bandwidth for audio instead of 20 or 25KHz. Personally I think this is a perfect example of "ham radio"...

  • I think I've got most of the parts needed to do this now, so I'll be able to talk to you one of these days without having to post on these videos.

  • Michael, thanks for the clarification that you're using an analog (9k6) radio for d-star. I was horrified at spending usd 500 for a radio just to use the network! My old passion for older hardware (as in I already own it) is justified!

  • Michael, thanks fo rthe video ... 'appreciate it! 73's de N2VU

  • hello Michael,

This is a great video. So far I have only been able to make a DSTAR simplex

contact with my IC-706MKIIG. My tx audio still has a lot of R2D2 problems. I am waiting on a new

USB sound that I hope will solve the problem. If not I will try another computer.
