@oliver69cork Now I'm not a big fan of Monty but also Rommel made mistakes here, he had orders to hold at the Egyptian border, he didn't and it's is a large part of why his supply situation was in trouble (his supply trucks having a 2'800 mile round trip) - Strategically a blunder on his part suggesting though he was a superior tactician he was not a superior strategist. Monty was attacking a strong defensive position and in his place I would probably want a 2-1 advantage as well.
@oliver69cork It's a little bit of a silly comment "If the 2 were evenly matched" - 1 side is always going to have an advantage - assuming the same supply and manpower for both armies with neither side having any fixed defenses. The advantage is still initially to the defender, the Germans would also have advantages in training, combined arms and tank quality - No fight is ever going to be even unless a company develops clones and the same factory's supply both armies.
Of course monty would beat rommel, far better resourced, lets be fair i don`t think you can put monty as some sort of legend especially when he had all the advantages over rommel. If the 2 were evenly matched then we`d see who was the better general, somehow i think rommel was superior seeing that he fought the way he did with great limitation, but thankfully the nazis were limited.I only see this in a military sense.
The Royal Navy starved the Axis Forces of vital supplies in N.Africa, The British had broke Axis codes and the R.A.F made the Axis lives hell! Monty broke Rommel and the Axis forces and sent Rommel running, Hitler told Rommel to stand and fight, Rommel refused and made his way home leaving his defeated troops to be hunted down like dogs! Monty got that fox, he got him good! And again in Operation Overlord 1944, Monty was the man!
