Canada Vignettes - Métis Coat

In 1841, the Earl of Caledon of Tyrone, Ireland, acquired an elegantly tailored deerskin coat trimmed with fringe and brightly dyed porcupine quill embroidery. This fashion, popularized by the Métis, adapts the style of the white "Coatmen" to traditional Indian materials.

  • @CanupawakpaDakota AWESOME! I loved this vignette as a kid. Tell your Dad he sounds great

  • @CanupawakpaDakota Oh I see.

  • @CelesteK There aren't any lyrics.

It's very similar to Jazz "Scat Singing".

  • @CanupawakpaDakota What's he saying in this song?

  • The drumming part is from a Moccasin Game held in Sioux Valley, Manitoba.

That's my father singing, I recognize the song.

  • Great video! If you are interested in the fur trade, you will probably like FUR, FORTUNE, AND EMPIRE: THE EPIC HISTORY OF THE FUR TRADE IN AMERICA (W. W. NORTON, JULY 2010). To see a book trailer for this book, search fur trade history on youtube, or search the title. The book is available in bookstores, online and in stores.
