English:

This video outlines a 5-day expedition to the archeological site of El Mirador, located in the vast northern reaches of the Peten jungle, Guatemala. The Mirador is known as the Cradle of Maya Civilization and is arguably home to the most massive temples found anywhere in the world.

The purpose of this video is rooted in showing others just how unique and important the Mirador site is. The entire Peten jungle is currently under attack from loggers, slash and burn agriculture, looting of archeological artifacts, and potential for unsustainable future commercial development. Richard Hansen is an archeologist that has been working in the Mirador Basin for nearly 30 years. His work focuses on further understanding, protecting, and promoting the site in a sustainable manner. A well developed long-term plan for the Mirador Basin could entail preserving the archeological treasures, sustaining the ecological balance of the jungle, and providing income for the Guatemalans who live in the area.
