Quite simply, this is a video that I just put together for what I think is one of the best and most powerful of my many recorded songs. By all reports, it will affect your mood for the day, or at least the hour, so consider this before you view it.

Believe it or not, neither the song nor the video started out with the intention of saying anything deep, profound or political. Sometime around the late eighties, or maybe it was the early nineties, I was looking across a subway car at an old man with a long white beard, who had a cane in his left hand and a bible under his right arm. I scribbled down the first line, and the rest of the lyrics essentially wrote themselves. Ditto, the video. It began with this simple idea I had, which led to the less than simple quest of tracking down a clip of an old Charlton Heston, riding on a train. The rest pretty much flowed together. Of course, it helped to own every classic film in creation.

Mike Boldt put the music to my lyrics, and provided every instrument and vocal for his rather brilliant and masterful recording that almost sounds like it should be a classic rock anthem. He also suggested how I could get Charlton onto the train, which led to my unintentional, but ultimately unavoidable Hitchcock-like cameo. While our renowned rifle association spokesmodel has been filmed on or around stagecoaches, airplanes, elephants, space ships, camels, weapons of mass destruction, a wide variety of chariots, and even a tide that traveled through a sensaround earthquake, rarely has he been seen riding common public transportation.

In my experience, the larger the picture, the more you will appreciate TURN AROUND, so you might want to maximize your screen before watching it. And again, you might want to prepare to have your perspective altered, at least temporarily.

  • This is amazing. I love the way you used these screen icons, who we usually think of as immortal, to show that time will take its toll on everyone, no matter how much you have grossed or how many fans you had.

  • I re-post this video every several months on facebook. Endlessly moving, especially as I'm getting up there in years, too. Great video and great song also.

  • Wow. "Turn Around" is a really interesting and engrossing song. I enjoyed it! l listened a few times and I need to hear it at least a few more. Between the lyrics and the irresistible images, there's a lot going on. It was hard to know where to focus. I listened without watching and watched with the sound off. I really liked the music and the singer's phrasing--Turn around and you - are - two... It's in my head now and that's the sign of a good song. I'll definitely explore your other work.
