Gerry Armstrong scores against the World Cup 1982 hosts Spain.
Spain 0 - 1 Northern Ireland (25/06/1982)
Pat Jennings, Jimmy Nicholl, Mal Donaghy, Chris Nicholl, John McClelland, David McCreery, Norman Whiteside (Sammy Nelson), Martin O'Neill, Billy Hamilton, Gerry Armstrong, Sammy McIlroy (Tommy Cassidy)
This was another fault of fixtures system in 1982. Germany vs. Austria and this match we so obvious that will end 1-0 as in that case both teams would go through. Spain and Northern Ireland knew which exact score will lead them through so after Gerry's goal game actually stopped. Sorry for the Slavs as there was no way that host will be dumped out in group stage.

Double nutmeg by Armstrong, and that after dribbling half the length of the pitch by himself...should have been worth 3 goals! But they only needed one in the end...

the game seemed to last for about 3 hours after Mal Donaghy was sent off - watched the rest of the game from behind the sofa. Classic stuff :)

@brianclough Aconada had a terrible tournament generally so i believe. See also: Zubizarreta's virtual owngoal against Nigeria :)

Luis Aconada would again cost Spain in the 1984 Euro Final with another goal-keeping error.
But take nothing away from possibly the greatest night for the Northern Ireland football team.
I remember watching this stunning upset on telly back then. Armstrong would later have a career in Spain. He and Jennings were the heroes of the night then.
