One word of advice ask Verizon Global Support to give you the Proprietary Unlock Code to use any SIM Card when abroad. If you are a customer for awhile they will do this free of charge once per year on each line with a GSM phone.
@travelplus1 I was with you right up until..."on each line with a GSM phone"? Not sure I'm following you since Verizon Wireless phones are aCDMA platform, not GSM.
EV-DO (EVolution Data Optimized) is only part of the 3G technology. 3G allows simultaneous use of voice and data (EV-DO). So having EV-DO doesn't make it 3G.

It says 3G Qualicomm on the back sticker so it sounds like its EVDO and 3G. I guess the 1x and EV are the same built into 1.

@travelplus1 Basically, EVDO is for high data rates like internet downloading.
1X is just a basic signal.
If you have 1X signal it is great for making calls but if you want to download games or music etc. you'll need EV signal.
EV is part of EV-DO which is EVolution Data Optimized (which essentially is the process of moving packets of data.
