Taken from Episode 3 of Season 5 (1981-1982)
Nobody comes to the circus anymore
The big top's a big flop they've all seen before
The incredible Garth and his amazing ball
The tightrope walker pretending to fall
Mangy old elephants standing on drums
Senile lions flashing their gums
A juggler for accountants who enjoy their work
A strong man for those who like a clean jerk
An illiterate ringmaster, who tries to force us
To watch middle-aged girls on milk-wagon horses
Is this what it means to be a star
To drive four hundred miles with a seal in your car?
We set up the tents, though our backs may be cramping
We take two weeks off every year and go camping
We're very nearly bankrupt, or so it looks
None of the acrobats can balance our books
They'll soon repossess all that we own
Our single trapeze man can't swing a loan
It's been a close shave for the lady with the beard
The magician's savings have disappeared
The tent's being pitched on insufficient grounds
The fat lady's lost over two hundred pounds
Our transport truck has been forcibly retired
The human cannonball came in loaded and was fired
The ringmaster says our future's in doubt
The fire-eater seemed a little put out
But that won't give us clowns a fright
Opportunity's never looked so bright
One of our colleagues has seen the light
He's Ronald McDonald, and he's doing alright!
