Your sword is not an authentic shin-gunto. It's not even Japanese. I could tell by the wrapping on the tsuka (handle), and I could see that the hamon (temper line) was acid etched. Yours is obviously a Chinese copy, made in the last few years. Also, unless you know how to polish a Japanese sword (which takes YEARS of practice) do not attempt to remove ANY rust. For instance, HAD your sword been authentic, by removing the rust from the tang (like you did in the video) you made the it worthless.

if you want to know bad enough to take a pic or short film of it then send me a private message and ill give you an email to send it to.
nice sword for sure!
Thank God this is a Chinese fake. If this kind of butchery was done to even a lower end authentic gunto it would have been a crime. Even so, I couldn't help cringing when you touched the blade with your bare hands....then the Break Free.....then power tools.....on the nakago no less! I'm going to have nightmares tonight.

If you ever try to find and buy a REAL Japanese sword (in traditional or gunto mounts), do your research first. Trust me, I made the same mistake when I got into collecting Japanese swords. Look at both fake and real Japanese swords; you will see a difference. And stay away from ebay; your better off looking at antique shops and estate sales. Again, I must stress, never remove ANY rust, and NEVER sharpen a Japanese sword. If you want it to be sharp, you MUST have it polished by an expert.

@Nihonto45 Thanks for the comments. I guess I just couldnt let the rust lie... OCD I guess.. Your assessment of the swords authenticity is very interesting. I've had my doubts about it my self. Either way its a good looking piece and it wasn't expensive to me. I know there is quite the process to properly sharpen and polish a sword properly and I would take great care of a sword that I have a more financial investment in. And I guess as much as it pains me I will leave the rust on in the future.
