"Jedermann" is a play by Hugo von Hofmannsthal based on the medieval morality play "Everyman". Written in 1911, it is performed every year at the Salzburg Festival. The Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974) set to music six monologues from Hofmannsthal's "Jedermann" for baritone and orchestra between 1943 and 1949.
In the fifth monologue, accompanied only by strings, Jedermann declares his faith in Christ as saviour, while feeling himself to be beyond redemption.
Ja! Ich glaub: solches hat er vollbracht,
Des Vaters Zorn zunicht gemacht,
Der Menschheit ewig Heil erworben
Und ist dafür am Kreuz verstorben.
Doch weiß ich, solches kommt zugut,
Nur dem, der heilig ist und gut:
Durch gute Werk und Frommheit eben
Erkauft er sich ein ewig Leben.
Da sieh, so steht um meine Werk:
Von Sünden hab ich einen Berg
So überschwer auf mich geladen,
Daß mich Gott gar nit kann begnaden,
Als er der Höchstgerechte ist.
Yes, I believe! This He hath done,
God Father's anger appeased,
Mankind's eternal salvation bought
Through His death on the cross.
But this I know, thereof partaketh only
He, whose soul is good and holy:
Through good deeds and piety
He gains life in eternity.
Lo, such is the aspect of my deeds:
I have burdened myself
With such a mountain of sins
That God, the peak of righteousness,
Could never forgive me.

This is very interesting, I was never aware of this. Thank you for introducing me Jedermann.

Thank you for viewing. I've been fascinated with this work for a long time. I noticed very little of Frank Martin's music available on YouTube which is a shame. I think this one of his best works.
