Mysterious Prothean Sphere from Mass Effect

On a corner of the map on one of the planets, there's a monument with a silver orb in it. It tells a story.

It requires that you have sorted out that problem with the elcor diplomat, the retired turian general, and the asari consort in the citadel. Once that's all solved, the asari consort gives you a trinket, which is used in the activation of this orb.

IMPORTANT! If you resolve the problem between the Turian general and the Asari consort before you resolve the problem between the Asari consort and the Elcor diplomat, she will NOT give you the trinket required for the activation of this sphere! Even though it will say she gave you the trinket in your journal, she will not mention the trinket, and the sphere will display this message:

"Examining the strange Prothean artifact reveals a small, irregularly shaped slot on the underside in the surface. It looks as if some would fit some kind of oddly shaped key or trinket... but where such an object could be found is a mystery you are unlikely to ever solve."

Crap. I botched this up in my hammering of X to skip the conversation. What is the "ability" that you receive from completing this quest? When you put the trinket in the orb, you get the text and it also pops up "Ability" on the screen.

thats in mass effect 2 aswell but it goes realy small and you get it in your captains quarters i think it mite be with one of the dlc i cant remember

This was really cool. It was very reminiscent of the Star Trek TNG episode "The Inner Light" to me. I wish it was a fully fleshed out cutscene rather than just walls of text, though.
