Arizona Trip Plan: APRIL 6-11 2007
Day 1-: Phoenix arrival 918AM, Phoenix to Sedona (2 hrs)
Montezuma Castle National Monument 17 exit 289
In SEDONA
The Sedona-Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Road - State Route 179, which runs north from Interstate 17 (Exit 298).
Oak Creek Town, Bell Rock [Bell Rock Pathway, which begins alongside Ariz. 179 just north of the Village of Oak Creek.(crowded)]
Ariz. 89A and turn left onto Airport Road, you'll drive up onto Airport Mesa. About halfway up the mesa is a small parking area from which trails radiate. RED ROCK LOOP/RED ROCK STATE PARK
BOYNTON CANYON: From the Y-intersection of Arizona 89A and Arizona 179 in downtown Sedona, go west (left) on 89A for 3.1 miles, then turn north (right) onto Dry Creek Road. Proceed 2.9 miles to the T-intersection at Boynton Pass Road. Turn left and proceed 1.5 miles to another T-intersection. Turn right, go 0.3 mile and look for a small, dirt parking area on the right.
The vortex sites are accessible in your car and a map is available at the Chamber of Commerce.
Day 2: Sedona to Monument Valley ( 4 hour 16 min drive)
1. NAVAJO NATIONAL MONUMENT IS 20 miles off of KAYENTA
Tours to Betatakin ruins starting 800am - 5 hour tour / round-trip from the visitor center to the Betatakin overlook
2. KAYENTA - Just north of Kayenta, on the road to Monument Valley, you'll pass by El Capitan, a huge plug of volcanic rock that rises from the desert floor. East of Kayenta on U.S. 160, watch for the red sandstone cliffs known as Baby Rocks. East of Tuba City, also on U.S. 160, watch for the two sandstone towers known as Elephant Feet.
3. MONUMENT VALLEY - $5 /17-mile Self Guide Scenic Tour
The exception to the no-traveling-off-road rule is the 3.2-mile Wildcat Trail, a loop trail
The Totem Pole, an oft-photographed spire of rock 300 feet high but only a few metres
