The over-ambitious 'Domesday Project', undertaken by the BBC in 1985-86.
The prohibitive cost, (over £5000 for the BBC AIV system) prevented it being widely adopted by schools, which was the main objective of the project. Consequently it was a failure. In retrospect, if Domesday had been launched ten years later, on the then standard CD-ROM format, and home PC's becoming commonplace, it may have been successful.
The Domesday system is frequently cited as an example of digital obsolescence.
