I was testing the Sennheiser MD 441-U for vocals. I have used it in the past and LOVED the mic...found myself feeling the same after my recent acquisition of a nice one. I had an Audio Technica 4041 small diaphram condenser on the guitar. The guitar is a Taylor 910. This was recorded on my laptop in Studio One in the garage...not a great deal of effort in the recording but had very satisfying results. The 'S' factor on the 441 is fantastic, I heard no real issues in the sibilants and no push on the low end but the quality is amazing. The proximaty effect was apparent but easily overcome with a little compression or just pushing the faders... I'm thrilled to have this pup in the arsenal now, I'll begin working with it on more serious projects immediately. The song was 'Bad Enough', originally cut on my 2008 record, Animule. This was a re-write of that tune...spur of the moment. Hope you enjoy. ps...I pushed the lows a little too much in the mastering but the AT 4041 was also a huge success for me on the 12th fret of that Taylor.

  • The 4041 sounds really nasty to my ears.

  • "The proximaty effect was apparent but easily overcome with a little compression or just pushing the faders..."

The proximity effect is a boost in the bass frequencies that occurs when a sound source is close to a directional microphone. If you don't like it, you might try rolling off the low end with an EQ, but I don't see what compression or riding the faders has to do with it.

  • Exceptionally well played and sung, and your voice really shines with the 441. BTW, what's the noise floor like?
