Dreams Are What We Wake Up From, directed by Daisy Goodwin. British TV documentary, 1989, which includes contributions from Richard Ford and Jay McInerney.
@MckyMseNTarotCrds, One of my teachers (professor at Washington State University) said that he never thought Carver was capable of writing a novel because of his spare writing style. But later after it came out that the editor had cut out a lot of Carver's work, during the editing process...my teacher changed his mind. I think he would have made one hell of a novelist. As it is, his short stories and poetry made literary history. I'm from Yakima and he's been a huge inspiration to this day.
I miss Carver. One of the finest American writers of all time. Imagine all the fantastic books he could've given us in the last 20 years. Ultramarine is one of my favorites.
Anybody else think Cathedral was his best collection? I think it's better by far than What We Talk About. I read how his editor is really largely responsible for that spare Carver style. The earlier collections are how the editor wanted it, but Carver started fighting back during Cathedral. And those tales aren't as "Carver-like", but they're way better, in my opinion.
Raymond Carver. What a piece of work. I discovered his stories during a particularly hard time in my life & instantly connected with them. He's still my favorite writer of all time. It's interesting to see the little vignettes of some of his stories,
Aspire to be a writer. You'll have plenty to write about.
