opening discussions on population control is good. people in power who ignore these discussions seek only to exploit human resources, not conserve them.

why'd stop on that, I propose the thermonuclear deletion of the whole Earth before the space got infected with us. :P

Even at a low worldwide growth rate of 1.17% per year we still double our population every 70 years! Combine this with increased resource consumption per capita and the level of resources required will double in an even shorter time.Growth of any kind is unsustainable due to the exponential growth function.

@sharkblubber - as you know I agree.
estimating "correct" population is impossible due to complexities of forces involved no one has all the information..

SO: best solution is to alternate between GROWTH and CUTBACK.
and of course make sure growth/cutback are gradual

2 analogies - stockmarket zigzag pattern, and athletes/body-builders "bulk-cut" cycles to acheive lean-physique

we need CUT CYCLE now.

But I think we disagree that population growth is unsustainable but disagree on how to go about decreasing the population: I would encourage voluntary use of contaception and raised uptake of education for women as the most ethical ways of reducing birthrates as seen in Kerala in India. The other more difficult issue is how to reduce per capita consumption to a sustainable level but this will be easier with lower birth rates than higher ones.

fair enough :)
i will research your references.

only something voluntary will work, as in the longrun as any force will be met with greater opposing consensus

I saw a freudian slip. sentance structure "i.. but".

this is intersting because ..
its so easy to find opposing views on the internet.. flame war is fun

but much harder to hammer out specific details.

discussion is welcome
