Joking around with the families affected by tropical storm Agatha while we help them out with food, clothes, and other household goods. I told them I was excited to deliver some help but only on one condition--they had to promise that they would do me a BIG favor. The favor? The next time a rain storm comes to Guatemala they need to send it up to Arizona...it´s not fair that they get all the rain! Haha! We had a good time joking around and I could tell it lifted some spirits during a hard time. Over twenty families had to leave their homes because of heavy rain which caused landslides. It was great to see some smiles on their faces...what amazing people!
For the past 8 years, Books for a Better World (www.booksforabetterworld.org) has been delivering children´s books to this small village. Our work has changed lives and helped this school grow into an example of how reading improves the educational experience. In eight years the school has grown from about 200 students to over 315 due to the fact that kids are STAYING in school instead of dropping out after the third grade (which was the custom in many rural towns). It´s great to see the change and help these folks during a difficult time!
